Protecting Transaction Data: What Every IT Pro Should Know

A Timespring Whitepaper

Every IT professional knows that all data is not of equal value to their organization. Today, revenue recognition, daily operations and competitive advantage rely on real-time electronic transactions, not paper or people. Lost or corrupt transactional data negatively impacts the bottom line and no matter what the cause, the CIO is immediately in the firing line.

When the organization depends on its data, the challenge is to recover the maximum amount of lost or corrupt data in the shortest possible time using systems that are practical to implement, affordable and non-intrusive.

Continuous protection is required for critical transactional data and today's tape backup, disk-to-disk backup, snapshots or replication products do not adequately provide this protection. This paper compares the various ways of protecting data and introduces the necessary tools for Continuous Data Protection. Backup is a waste of time and money if the data can't be recovered. Analyst firm, Enterprise Strategy Group, estimates that 40% of recoveries fail. The fault may not lie with the backup software or the tape, but rather with the complexity of the task being performed across the application, server, storage and network layers. Unless everything lines up flawlessly at the time the backup is being performed, the procedure is vulnerable to failure. Failure root cause analysis is almost impossible, and some backup providers estimate that they expend up to 90% of their time on problems that are not inherent to their software.
