Why CMMI Does Not Guarantee Application Quality Excellence (And What to Do about It)
A CAST Software White Paper by Dr. Bill Curtis, SVP and Chief Scientist
www.castsoftware.com
Abstract
CMMI contributes to, but does not guarantee excellent application system quality since it is not a software quality standard. CMMI treats application quality primarily as a process of finding and removing defects within a single project. However, application quality encompasses much more than the defect detection practices included in CMMI¾issues such as maintainability, robustness, security, interoperability, and other attributes that control an application’s cost of ownership and value to the business. Consequently, an organization can be appraised at CMMI Level 5 without fully addressing application system quality in its development process.
