The Resume: A Practical Guide to Resume Writing

A Selection Strategies whitepaper

www.selectionstrategies.com

Introduction
This paper is intended to be a brief, focused guidebook on résumé writing to help you improve the final product. Our guidance is based on a synthesis of research, factual sources and anecdotal evidence from our experience working with hundreds of candidates a year. We plan to buck some conventional wisdom, share a few tricks of the trade, offer practical and useful suggestions and, in the end, we hope you’ll benefit from our experience and advice.
Basically, a résumé is the equivalent of product marketing collateral. Its intention is to highlight your experience in a way that communicates your unique value to a potential employer. The objective of a well written résumé is to prompt a follow-up call or an interview to give you the opportunity to elaborate on your experiences and further explain your value. Therefore, the résumé should be concise but it should clearly highlight the contributions you’ve made in the past. In general, prospective employers are looking for a few things on your résumé: what you’ve done, what you’ve contributed, the consistency of your performance, and the progression of your career.
