Abstract
Information technology in the health care industry must mimic the care-giving side of the operation: reliable, accessible at a moment’s notice, and integrated throughout a highly complex operating environment. IT departments in hospitals must support and enhance the quality of care through technology. In this case study, a major healthcare provider in Chicago made the decision to adopt a new patient care system for electronic medical records as well as a new picture archival and communications system (PACS). Implementation required a rethinking of the customer’s data storage environment.
