Solutions for Information Encryption

A Voltage Security White Paper

www.voltage.com

Abstract
While many organizations are struggling to prevent data leakage at the container level - laptops, USB tokens and tapes, the data that they are trying to protect is often stored in mission critical data stores in back office databases, server applications, and middleware stores within the datacenter. Given the legacy nature of many of these applications, and the vast numbers of dependent applications that feed off this data every second, re-architecting the ecosystem to accommodate encryption is complex and can cost many man years of effort.

However, through an innovation based on proven encryption, this problem has been solved through a technology called Format Preserving Encryption. In this paper, Voltage Security will introduce a solution which allows data formats, database schemas, and dependent applications to remain intact by encrypting data in such a way that the format of the field is preserved. Thus, Credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, Account codes and other data can be encrypted and stored without change. The whitepaper covers deployment scenarios and examples of how data privacy can be managed within legacy datacenter systems with minimal IT impact.
