Abstract
Instant Messaging (IM) is becoming one of the fastest growing communications tools. It is not only being used at home for keeping in touch with friends and family but it is also being used by business professionals for communicating with clients and colleagues.
Although IM provides tremendous advantages for both personal and business reasons, it also opens up numerous challenges from a security and liability perspective for businesses. In this paper we will discuss some of the reasons for businesses to be wary of IM in the workplace and we will address some growing concerns amongst the business community for monitoring and surveilling IM usage in their environment.
