Large Hospital System Identity Management: Provisioning and Password Reset ROI Analysis

Abstract
This large hospital system is experiencing rapid growth as a leader in the healthcare industry. Some of the challenges of such growth is the need for more dedicated IT resources to manually provision users into and out of the large hospital systems suite of application systems, and an increasing load on the help desk for manually resetting user passwords. Currently, 6 of 8 FTE’s (Security Administrators) are dedicated to provisioning and de-provisioning users. Additionally, 40% of help desk calls are requests for resetting passwords. These are fairly typical realities that face most large organizations that have not implemented automated Identity Management solutions, such as provisioning and password reset.
This large hospital system has asked CPSG to help develop a business case and ROI for implementing an Identity Management solution, specifically an automated provisioning and password-reset system. Per the large hospital system, its sole objective is to produce hard dollar savings. Although there are many intangible benefits from automating provisioning and password reset activities, our analysis will target only savings that can be quantified by eliminating the resource cost associated with these activities. In addition to the hard dollar savings, utilizing a more streamlined provisioning process would allow for optimal and much-improved customer service to the physicians and other healthcare providers that utilize this large hospital system’s business applications and infrastructure.
