Deborah Doffing, Director Information Risk Management Security Policies & Information Security Officer, UnitedHealth Group and Optum

Deb started out at 3M in Computer Operations working in a mainframe environment until 1990 when desktop computers and LANs became the rage. She helped to setup the first internal Helpdesk at 3M and moving on to centralized software distribution and later Email management. 3M's largest customer was, and still is, the Department of Defense so security was a part of every job held at 3M. She was also a consultant, working in many industries as a technical business analyst and Lotus Notes administrator. Each client had varying levels of acceptable risk as well as interpretations of applicable regulations. Security was considered when developing requirements for a project deliverable. However, security was often scaled back if it interfered with a budget or project timeline. SheI continued her career working for two startups. One that was victim of the Dot Bomb era and the other was negatively impacted by 9/11. Her role grew to encompass risk management and risk-based approaches to security. She has had a dedicated role in IT security/risk in the manufacturing, financial, telecommunications, transportation, and healthcare industries.

Mobile computing and the use of consumer devices are a fact of life, with enterprise deployments increasing. In fact, more than half of CIOs surveyed for 2013's "State of the CIO" expect to complete one or more major mobility initiatives within the next year. These will include projects to better connect remote and mobile workers to company resources in an always-on environment; projects to enable more meaningful collaboration among geographically dispersed employees and teams; and, increasingly, efforts to extend and deepen the relationship between the business and its smartphone-dependent, tablet-toting customers and suppliers.
