Roman Dumiak, Executive in Residence for Industry, DePaul Innovation Development Lab

Currently, Roman Dumiak is the Executive-in-Residence for Industry at the DePaul University Innovation Development Laboratory (iDLab). As the Executive-in-Residence, Roman acts as the liaison between the DePaul faculty and corporate enterprises that are currently engaged with DePaul's iDLab. working to bridge the gap between the business and academic communities developing innovative solutions. Previously, Roman held several positions with Allstate Insurance including Director of the Technology Innovation group, Chief Enterprise Architect and Sr. IT Planning Consultant. His focus included both strategic planning as well as directing and facilitating efforts utilizing innovative software and hardware solutions from the ideation phase through implementation as part of Allstate Technology and Strategic Ventures.

Case Study: Agile Development vs Annual Budgeting

Nearly every IT or Development team is now using Agile Development.  It’s being done in a variety of flavors, from Scrum to SAFe, and it’s helped to move organizations from large waterfall deployments to more frequent incremental releases of functionality.  However, many times there is still a conflict between this approach and how capital is budgeted and the expectations of the project’s business sponsors.  This presentation will discuss different approaches to narrow that gap and provide some real world examples of how this was done.

Shaun has worked in every area of software development including development, architecture and large-scale solution development. He is a sought out speaker on topics including technology innovation and management. Currently he is on the Computer Science Advisory board at University of Illinois at Chicago, which helps prepare computer science graduates for the tech market.
