CIO Priorities for 2014 and Top 10 Strategic Predictions

Gartner Executive Programs will share preliminary results of its annual CIO survey highlighting key trends and top priorities as shared by CIOs and their leadership team. Gartner has been conducting its CIO survey (the largest of its kind) for more than fifteen years reaching over 2000 participants globally and industry-wide. In this time, we have witnessed business's need of the role of CIO and IT leadership shift from one of reactive effectiveness to proactive value. It will be critical for all CIOs, regardless of the perceived maturity of their organization, to recognize this shift and adapt to it. To further illustrate these changes, Gartner will also review its top 10 strategic technology predictions and how they will impact the strategy and direction of both IT and business.

Thor Madsen, Executive Partner with Gartner Executive Programs advises executives in the use of technology for competitive advantage. His primary area of focus includes practical strategies for exploiting change and the growth of mass collaboration, mobility, predictive analytics ("big data") and the "Cloud" for business results. Prior to joining Gartner, Mr. Madsen worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers and PwC Consulting in their high-technology and media practices. Mr. Madsen presents regularly on the topics of innovation, emerging trends and change at business, university and community forums. In addition to his work at Gartner, he has served as spokesperson for a Chicago-area nonprofit focused on government transparency and accountability and plays a leadership role in his community facilitating roundtables on the impact of political and social change. Mr. Madsen holds a BA degree, with honors, from DePaul University.


Todd Nugent, CIO Chapman & Cutler LLP Todd Nugent, CIO Chapman & Cutler LLP

Todd Nugent began his Information Technology Security career in 1988 investigating and reporting on the first internet-wide security incident, the Robert Morris Worm.  Mr. Nugent has taught Computer Science to undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Chicago for 25 years, focusing on Systems, Networks and Security.  Mr Nugent has served as a Computer Science Research Director, President of a Network and Security Consulting company and currently as CIO of a large law firm, where is is also the Chief Security Officer.  Mr. Nugent has served on multiple Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) groups and spoken on security at many conferences over the last 20 years.


Christine Watts, Vice President of Consumer Banking and Lending in Business Technology at Discover Financial Services, a Direct Banking and Payment Services company with one of the most recognized brands in U.S. financial services.  A member of Discover's Business Technology leadership Christine provides technology support for all banking businesses. This includes the implementation of a leading edge banking platform to enhance customer experience, increase operational effectiveness, accelerate time to market, and support product expansion. Christine is regarded as an expert technologist with a deep understanding of the business and technology.  Christine has worked across many industries; Retail, Financial, Manufacturing, Insurance, Utilities, her ability to adapt and learn has allowed her to be successful in every position she has held over her 27 year career.


Parthiv Sheth, Dir Business Intelligence, Hyatt is an executive with over 15 years of global IT management and solution delivery experience. He is currently the Director of Business Intelligence at Hyatt Hotels Corporation where he leads the efforts to build and improve analytics and customer relationship management capabilities. In his prior roles at Hyatt, he drove IT strategy, key initiatives and IT operations for finance, human resources, procurement and other corporate functions. He started his career at KPMG where he focused on delivering business and technology solutions to Fortune 500 clients. Before joining Hyatt, he led the business systems department and managed a portfolio of applications at a national home improvement retailer. He is passionate about the convergence of analytics, marketing and technology and its applications. He has a Master's degree in Computer Science from University of Illinois at Chicago and MBA from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
Jim Vaselopulos, Vice President and Partner at PSC Group
Moderator: Jim Vaselopulos, Vice President and Partner at PSC Group, is a seasoned business executive with domain expertise in Financial Services, Marketing, Manufacturing and Service Industries. Jim works closely with many firms to help align business needs and technology for competitive advantage. His many roles include Vice President and Partner at PSC Group, LLC, Interim CIO at several organizations and strategic business consultant to many others.
