Dave Dyson on Reducing Risk in Complex Technology Transformations - Spotlight Interview

In this Technology Executives Club® Spotlight Interview, Alex Jarett sits down with Dave Dyson, Founder of Eclipse, to discuss how organizations can more effectively plan, source, and manage complex technology transformations, from global enterprise networks and communications platforms to cloud, data centers, customer experience, and AI-enabled contact centers.

Dave founded Eclipse 17 years ago after seeing a need for a better way to help large organizations procure, implement, and manage increasingly complex technology environments. The company began with a strong focus on telecommunications and has expanded into enterprise networking, communications platforms, cloud and data center solutions, and customer experience technologies.

Eclipse primarily works with middle-market and larger enterprises, especially organizations with multiple locations, complex infrastructure, and internal IT teams that are stretched thin.
Experience Matters When the Project Is Not Routine

One of Dave’s key points is that many internal technology teams may only undertake a major network or infrastructure transformation once every seven or ten years.

Eclipse does this kind of work every day.

That experience allows the company to help clients evaluate options, choose the right providers, manage implementation, and avoid many of the problems that can cause major technology projects to stall or fail. Dave and his team have worked through these kinds of projects hundreds of times, so they know where problems are likely to emerge, what questions to ask, and what actions can keep the project moving.

The Right Partners and Escalation Paths

Experience alone is not the whole story.  Eclipse also brings long-standing relationships with major carriers, technology providers, and other partners involved in complex enterprise projects.  Those relationships can become especially important when something goes wrong.

Dave explains that major projects rarely go perfectly. When delays, implementation problems, or vendor issues arise, Eclipse often knows who to call and how to escalate the issue quickly.  In one global network transformation, Dave says those relationships helped prevent a situation from reaching the point where contracts were being terminated and lawyers became involved.

Transforming a Global Enterprise Network

Dave shares an example involving a large global manufacturer with locations across Western Europe, China, Brazil, and other regions where building and managing enterprise networks can become extremely complex.

Rather than immediately beginning the transformation, Eclipse spent more than a year and a half planning with the company.  The first step was actually to renew portions of the existing environment while Eclipse and the client developed the longer-term network transformation strategy.  The planning process addressed provider selection, security requirements, global connectivity, sequencing, and the potential failure points that can emerge during a large international implementation.

Dave notes that he has worked on hundreds of network projects during his career and has never seen one go perfectly. The goal is not to assume problems will never happen. It is to plan for them and have the experience and relationships to respond when they do.

Know the Problem Before Adding AI

The same discipline applies to AI.  Dave argues that organizations are often moving too quickly to add AI before clearly defining the problem they are trying to solve.  That becomes especially important in customer experience and contact center transformation, where organizations may be replacing systems that have been in place for 15 or 20 years.

Moving from a legacy Avaya or Cisco environment to a modern AI-enabled contact center is not simply an upgrade. It can require organizations to rethink how employees work, how customers are served, and where automation can create real value.

Use AI to Make People Better

One of Dave’s favorite current AI use cases is not replacing customer service employees. It is making them more effective.  He describes a contact center transformation for a large national luxury furniture retailer. Eclipse helped the company develop a roadmap for where AI could provide practical value, including assisting agents while they are speaking with customers.

Instead of forcing an employee to search through multiple applications and screens, AI can listen to the conversation, recognize the customer, surface relevant information, and help the employee determine what to do next.  Dave describes the goal as creating an environment where “every agent is your best agent.”

His broader philosophy is simple: technology should serve people, not the other way around.  Better technology should help employees do their jobs more effectively, improve the customer experience, and make the organization stronger.

Building a Company Beyond the Founder

Dave closes the conversation by sharing how his perspective on Eclipse has evolved and why he is now focused on building a company designed to continue serving its clients, employees, and communities well beyond his own involvement.

That shift was inspired by a personal journey that caused him to rethink what success meant and why he had built the company in the first place. He now talks about creating what he calls an “infinite company,” developing the people around him and building an organization that can continue growing without depending entirely on its founder.
