John Nienhuis of Creative Werks on the SCALE Framework for Digital Transformation, Technology Leadership, and AI in Manufacturing - Spotlight Interview
Oct 13, 2026John Nienhuis of Creative Werks on the SCALE Framework for Digital Transformation, Technology Leadership, and AI in Manufacturing - Spotlight Interview
In this Technology Executives Club® Spotlight Interview, Alex Jarett sits down with John Nienhuis, Senior Director of Information Technology at Creative Werks and a member of the Technology Executives Club® Board of Advisors, to discuss digital transformation, technology leadership, ERP implementations, and AI in manufacturing.
John brings a unique perspective to technology leadership, having worked across engineering, quality, manufacturing operations, client services, and IT. Throughout his career, he has developed an approach to transformation that connects technology decisions with business strategy, operational processes, and the people responsible for making change successful.
A Technology Leader Who Understands the Operations of Manufacturing
John's career has taken him beyond the traditional IT department. At Plastic Decorators, he helped establish manufacturing operations in Mexico, supported the transition of business to those facilities, and eventually managed a manufacturing plant.
At Creative Werks, where he has spent more than 16 years, John served in client services before moving into senior technology leadership. That experience gave him a detailed understanding of manufacturing operations, customer requirements, procurement, scheduling, and how business processes fit together.
He has used that knowledge to help develop an ecosystem of technology and processes that supports Creative Werks, a fast-growing contract manufacturer and co-packer serving major food brands.
The SCALE Framework for Digital Transformation
Throughout his career, John began recognizing patterns in successful and unsuccessful transformation initiatives. Some projects delivered meaningful results, while others struggled with resistance to change or failed to achieve their objectives.
Those experiences led him to develop the SCALE Framework, which incorporates five principles he believes are essential to successful transformation:
- S: Strategy Before Systems. Understand business objectives before selecting technology.
- C: Current State Clarity. Evaluate existing processes and data before automating them.
- A: Architecture for Scale. Build technology that supports current operations and future growth.
- L: Leverage Automation, Data, and AI. Use technology to create meaningful business value.
- E: Execute, Engage, and Evolve. Combine execution, stakeholder engagement, and continuous improvement.
John explains that SCALE provides a practical mindset for understanding business problems, evaluating opportunities, and working with stakeholders throughout the transformation process.
Strategy Before Systems
One of John's most important principles is that business strategy must drive technology decisions, not the other way around.
Before beginning an initiative, technology leaders need to understand what the organization is trying to accomplish, what the desired future state looks like, and how success will be measured.
John describes using a change review board following major ERP implementations to prioritize requests, manage resources, and identify opportunities that will deliver the greatest business value.
His message is straightforward: organizations should not go looking for problems to solve with a particular technology tool. They should identify the problems that matter to the business and then determine how technology can help.
You Can't Automate Chaos
Another important element of SCALE is Current State Clarity. John explains that organizations must understand their existing processes, data, and operating environment before attempting to improve them through automation.
His principle is simple: "You can't automate chaos."
Without that understanding, organizations risk carrying inefficient processes and poor-quality information into new systems. Establishing benchmarks and improving data and process readiness creates a stronger foundation for digital transformation and AI.
Architecture Must Support Future Growth
John has been involved in major ERP replacements, ERP upgrades, warehouse management systems, and the integration of technology across manufacturing operations.
He explains that these projects require organizations to think beyond their immediate requirements. Technology architecture needs to support the business today while remaining adaptable as operations and technologies evolve.
AI adds another consideration. John believes technology leaders must understand how AI may fit into their architecture so they do not build systems or custom code that could become obsolete or limit future opportunities.
He also emphasizes regularly evaluating whether existing systems are still delivering their intended business value.
Transformation Success Depends on Leadership
The final element of SCALE, Execute, Engage, and Evolve, addresses the people and leadership side of transformation.
John believes technology initiatives succeed or fail based on leadership, adoption, and execution. Even with his extensive operational experience, he recognizes that technology leaders cannot understand every business requirement on their own.
Successful transformation requires partnerships with business stakeholders, communication, organizational change management, and shared accountability for results.
He also views transformation as an ongoing process rather than a project with a permanent finish line. Once a new system or process is implemented, the organization has established a new starting point for continuous improvement.
Taking a Strategic Approach to AI in Manufacturing
Creative Werks is exploring how AI can improve its manufacturing and business operations. John explains that the organization has developed a strategic roadmap for implementing AI and is identifying practical use cases where the technology can create value.
One area of focus is making business processes and information more conversational.
John describes opportunities to place AI agents in front of existing processes and systems, allowing employees to interact with information more easily, receive support, and analyze data through conversational interfaces.
Looking ahead, he sees AI allowing business leaders to participate more directly in shaping technology solutions. Rather than relying entirely on traditional development processes, business stakeholders may increasingly be able to express requirements and interact with systems through AI.
Technology Leadership Is a Continuous Discipline
John's career illustrates the value of understanding business operations before making technology decisions. His experience across engineering, manufacturing, client services, and IT has helped shape an approach emphasizing strategy, processes, architecture, leadership, and continuous improvement.
Through the SCALE Framework, John brings those lessons together into a practical approach to digital transformation. As AI becomes a larger part of enterprise technology, those principles remain relevant to organizations working to improve operations and create business value.
